[self-promotion] FRA U.S. Railroad Crossing Inventory, With A Map For Exploring The Records

The original public source is the Federal Railroad Administration’s crossing inventory: https://data.transportation.gov/d/m2f8-22s6

It includes reported crossing locations, traffic and warning equipment. Two details matter when working with the numbers: the date an inventory was retrieved is different from the year a traffic count was reported, and missing information should not be interpreted as zero.

Disclosure: I used this source to build Rail Crossing Atlas with help from Codex: https://railcrossingatlas.tansolutions.org/

The map lets you look up a town or crossing ID and compare reported values, with dates and sources kept visible. The inventory currently shown was retrieved on October 4, 2026, but some individual traffic counts are older. I’m sharing the original dataset here alongside the map because those date differences are worth keeping in mind when exploring it.
