Most of<br \/>\n characters whose intelligence places a title on this list are<br \/>\n effected or affected through the use of hardware, software or<br \/>\n genetic alteration (rarely). Additions and corrections would<br \/>\n be most appreciated as the list compiler has<br \/>\n not read all of the works listed here – or even a significant<br \/>\n portion, and will probably never have a chance to do so. My<br \/>\n thanks to Dan Bloch and Robert Stanley for suggestions, ideas<br \/>\n and editing. NOT forced evolution<br \/>\n however.<br \/>\n other intelligences (O) – beings which are difficult to<br \/>\n categorize: anything Berserker, tanks, books, planets,<br \/>\n planets (Asimov’s Gaia), satellites, etc. Where (O) is<br \/>\n used, the particular form has also been named when known.<br \/>\n programs (P) – able to move independently from one computer<br \/>\n system to another, usually created by a program(mer)<br \/>\n (_The Adolescence or P1_).<br \/>\n robots (R) – constitute functional and specialized beings<br \/>\n which are mobile and are not (S) or (P). Anything between<br \/>\n vaguely humanoid (Dr. Who’s Cybermen) and computers on<br \/>\n wheels (R2D2) can be considered robots of the ‘functional’<br \/>\n robot class. ‘Specialized’ robots are those which are<br \/>\n geared\/optimized to performing one job – they can look like<br \/>\n either androids (The Terminator) or functional robots (Val’s<br \/>\n from _Pirates of the Thunder_).<br \/>\n ships\/computer systems (S) – essentially an (A) which is<br \/>\n only mobile in the form of a (star) ship (_Pirates of the<br \/>\n Thunder_). However, there are cases where the (S) is<br \/>\n essentially a well programmed (R) which is only mobile<br \/>\n as stated (_The Number of the Beast_).<br \/>\n cyborgs\/mechanical humans (Y) – strictly speaking these are not<br \/>\n AI. The definition here is that the (Y) is either (1) a human<br \/>\n brain in control of a computer system\/star ship (_The Ship<br \/>\n Who Sang_) where at the very least the person’s brain has<br \/>\n been modified to contain computerized parts (_The Rapture<br \/>\n Effect?_) (Did you ever wish that you could have a math<br \/>\n co-processor?). (Y)’s are NOT (for the purpose of this<br \/>\n list) organic beings whose natural body parts have been<br \/>\n replaced by mechanical ones (ie.
