Complaints about harrassment by debt collectors are among
\nthe most numerous complaints received by my Consumer Protection
\nDivision. There are both federal and state laws to protect you
\nfrom unfair debt collection practices.
\n A debt collector may contact you in person, in writing, or
\nby phone. However, a debt collector may not contact you at
\ninconvenient or unusual times or at work if your employer
\ndisapproves.
\n You may stop a collection agency from contacting you by
\nwriting a letter telling them to stop. Once they receive this
\nletter, they may not contact you again.
\n No debt collector may threaten you with criminal prosecution
\nto scare you into paying a bill. A collection agency cannot sue
\nyou, garnish your wages, or seize collateral on it’s own.
\n Collection agencies cannot use obscene language or make
\nfalse statements when collecting a debt. In most cases, the

\ncollector is not allowed to tell anyone other than you or your
\nattorney that you owe money.
